AMC has had quite the television lineup through the years. For example, both Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead have enjoyed major critical success. However those are not the only successful shows for AMC, a couple other notable shows include; Better Call Saul and Fear The Walking Dead. In my opinion, AMC is the hottest network on cable television right now. Here’s an example as to why I feel this way about AMC, according to AMC’s press release on 5/27/16, “the network is now home to five of the top 10 shows on cable TV and two of the top three cable premieres this television season”. Here’s the thing, AMC may have another hit on their hands, and it has received the graphic novel to television treatment (similar to The Walking Dead). The show I’m writing about is Preacher, a dark action-comedy-drama extravaganza brought to you by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin.
DISCLAIMER: I started watching this show even though I knew nothing about the graphic novel, but that’s what makes it enjoyable for me. I’ve been slowly introduced to the story and characters. I went in blind and I like the show better because of the way I began watching it.
It’s early, but Preacher is definitely one of the most unique shows on television. The characters are odd yet endearing. The action is gripping but not too Walking Dead-ish (violence for the sake of violence). The direction is also solid, action scenes are detailed and exceptionally shot. Seth Rogen, Scott Winant, and Evan Goldberg all take part in lead direction of the episodes. I really like the universe they’ve created in Preacher. When I watch, I truly feel like I’m in a Texan church surrounded by barren land. Every time I check out Preacher, I’m instantly immersed in the episode. Kudos to Rogen and co. for giving us an engaging and lively world.
The front runners truly cast the best actors possible. Dominic Cooper fits the protagonist (Jesse Custer) perfectly. Cooper has been able to tread the fine line of the troubled but good-natured man very well. I don’t love what I’ve seen from Tulip (played by Ruth Negga), but Negga does a good job in her role. Cassidy (played by Joseph Gilgun) is my favorite side character, he may actually be the first Irish vampire of all time, but don’t quote me on that. The whole cast has done very well up to this point (at this moment, episode 4 debuts tonight).
All in all, you guys need to start watching Preacher right now. I won’t press the buttons on the remote for you, but I can tell you that it airs on AMC Sunday nights at 9pm. Start watching Preacher right now!
