Recently, when I did my must see movies of June I left Popstar off of my list. That was a huge mistake. Based on the trailers I thought this was a hit or miss movie that appeared way to similar to a modern day Adam Sandler movie. While very skeptical of the movie, I decided to see it because I was fond of The Lonely Island and their work on SNL. Hey, these guys are pretty funny; I will give them a chance.

While the movie was not necessarily great, it widely exceeded my expectations. It has been a while I have been so pleasantly surprised going to the theaters. Yea, Captain America: Civil War was great, but I expected it to be.

The movie, written by Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone is a mockumentary that focuses on the solo career of Andy Samberg’s character Connor4real after he broke away from The Style Boys. The fellow writers, who made The Lonely Island, basically play fictionalized versions of themselves..

The plot of the movie is entirely predictable and basic but that does not mean this movie is bad. Andy Samberg plays an obnoxious, spoiled, and arrogant artist who abandoned his friends and surrounds himself with yes men. These actions completely destroy his career as he is trying to promote his new album.

Sanberg spends most of the movie doing a Justin Bieber impersonation (youtube.com)

While Samberg is funny, what puts the movie over the top is the surprise cameos. Well regarded musicians such as Mariah Carey, DJ Khaled, and Seal all describe how big on an influence Connor4Real was on them. Without spoiling anything, the best cameo is Justin Timberlake, which is fitting because of his relationship with the band and their viral videos from SNL.

The cameos are fantastic in this movie as the intro features Adam Levine (spin.com)

Is this movie must see? Not really. I think this will be a great movie to watch when you are flipping through the channels. However, I will say that if you have a chance and money is not tight go see this movie in theaters. The music is funny and actually really good, though most of the sounds can be already found on YouTube. So far the Box Office has been awful getting only $4.6 Million on a $20 million budget. If the box office does not pick up, there will be no future projects for Sanberg and The Lonely Island. While I don’t want a sequel, I would watch a spin off. This is also concerning because it hurts the SNL brand. SNL is supposed to be where future movie stars get their big breaks and it looks like that is not a trend anymore. Today, the only recent movie stars are Jason Sudenkis, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig. While I enjoyed Horrible Bosses, Trainwreck, and Bridesmaids, they are not necessarily big box office movies.
