Movie-goers had their hands full this weekend, Black Mass, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and Everest all debuted last Friday.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials won the weekend, earning $30.3 million. While Black Mass came in second place, earning $23.4 million. Black Mass was critically and financially successful, some critics have marked this as a comeback for Johhny Depp. It’s not surprising that the Maze Runner sequel was successful, the young adult genre is a powerful thing and not many other movies can stop it. Jake Gyllenhaal’s(His last name is very hard to spell) Everest earned $7.6 million in its opening weekend. I expected Everest to open with an average gross, because Universal Pictures didn’t market the movie well enough. Everest received positive reviews, but if Universal Pictures hopes to break even, they need to increase the marketing push. One silver lining, the budget for Everest only totalled $65 million, so there’s that.
M. Night Shyamalan’s baby has done quite well considering his last couple “films”. The Visit finished the weekend with $11.4 million. While M. Night has been a punching bad as of late, his latest release seems to be a comeback film. M. Night could definitely do a lot worse than The Visit.
