This morning, Colombia Pictures released the first trailer for their upcoming movie, Concussion. The film details Dr. Bennet Omalu(Will Smith), and his fight against the NFL to increase Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy(CTE) awareness. Other actors starring in Concussion include; Alec Baldwin, Herb Brooks, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Paul Reiser, and even Luke Wilson.
The trailer was very dramatic, CTE is a very real and depressing problem in the NFL. This story should definitely resonate with fans of the NFL, as numerous former players have sadly committed suicide as a result of CTE. Last year, former San Diego Chargers legend Junior Seau committed suicide. Seau’s family elected to let doctors test and evaluate his brain after death and the results concluded that Seau suffered from CTE.
I think this is a very important film, it’s much more than a sports drama. While CTE awareness has increased over the years, the NFL and its fans are still largely unaware of CTE and its symptoms. If this movie is critically and financially successful, it could deal a huge blow to the NFL. This is because the NFL has done everything in their power to keep CTE backlash quiet. If a movie about CTE succeeds, the NFL would be forced to answer for itself.
